As any parent knows there is both anticipation and apprehension for the day your baby begins to walk. For some they cringe because their 10 month old doesn’t know enough about life yet to realize how much trouble they can get into with their increased mobility. For others they’ve spent months coaxing their cautious 1+ year old to take those independent first steps with a goal other than mommy’s or daddy’s waiting arms. Yes, we have been in the company of the latter with Micah as he was content to crawl through his 15-month anniversary. But now, gone are those days of longing for Micah’s independence that would leave me with a bit more freedom (and, I suppose, the need for more energy to keep up)! Like it or not, our little guy has figured out this walking gig and clearly, there’s no stopping him now.
His debut walk to nowhere-in-particular went virtually unnoticed by all of the kids who had come over to our house to feed our baby chickens. Unnoticed by them, but, momma, of course, caught it all and has it recorded in her mental video file – it was precious and inconspicuous. However, the following Sunday at church, Micah left modesty behind and decided to demonstrate his newly acquired skill for everyone to see (which literally means EVERYONE since the Gmz church meets in a circle with little Micah doing his thing right in the middle of it). So, there was the little white boy, walking back and forth from me to one of the support columns in the middle of the room – big smile pasted one his face. Not long into this, one of his sandals fell off, but that didn’t stop him, he just kept on walking around, obviously proud of himself and quite possibly showing off the fact that he’s SO good, he doesn’t even need that shoe.
But the cherry to top it all off was when he discovered a round, marble-sized seed on the floor. He grabbed it, inspected it, and proceeded to throw it across the room. Much to his delight, the person nearest to where it landed, rolled it back to him. Oh, now this is fun! Someone else from the congregation rolled another seed in his direction and his game continued with multiple participants. Yes, all of this during the middle of that week’s sermon. For those of you who are cringing inside thinking “How could you let Micah be such a disruption in church?” I assure you, I can sympathize with your cringe even now in retelling this event, but at the time I just had to chuckle…I guess things are a bit more laid back here on this side of the world.
ps. The “What does grandma say?” in the video is an inside joke from this summer’s family reunion that we missed. Micah learned of it from Grandma and Grandpa Williamson’s visit in August and still remembers them by it.
He's gotten so big!! Thanks for sharing the video!! I really miss you guys!! -SJBLitke
