Ding Dong

“Ding dong…” our make believe doorbell rang the other night when a pirate, a spy, Snow White, Toothless the Night Fury (from “How to Train a Dragon”), Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, and a Babe Ruth showed up on our door step with three words we didn’t expect to hear in Ethiopia “Trick or Treat!”

It wasn’t our idea, but we’re glad someone else had it! Allison, her husband Craig and their three kids live and work among the Gmz in a place about 3 hours from our home at Gesses. They had planned a trip which landed them spending the night in our compound on November 2. With three different houses occupied by three American families totaling 7 children, Allison’s idea of Halloween at Gesses was an easy sell to the rest of us (especially when she offered to provide the candy!).

Micah was too little to stake his claim on any of the candy, but he wasn’t too little to get into the fun of dressing up. After much deliberation, he decided that he wanted his first Halloween costume to be the “Very Hungry Caterpillar” from the book that his dad has been borrowing to use in his language learning sessions. So, after his evening nap, he was rolled up in a green blanket and given feet and antennae. And walla, Halloween at Gesses.
