I've Been Shot!

Not much of a story to tell here but we have some fun pictures to share following Wednesday morning’s visit to the Swedish Clinic (no the doctors do not go dur…dee, dur, dur, dur dur like the Swedish Chef on the Muppets.). Anyway, Andrea and I got our one year Rabies booster so we should be good there for another 5 years. Andrea was brave, I, Travis, survived mine without so much as a peep (on the outside, that is).  Then it was Micah’s turn…

Micah woke up as he was brought into the nurses’ room and he was in a GREAT mood. We took him out of his car seat and put him on the table and he was wiggling and smiling a lot as the nurse prepared the two syringes. Andrea then held his legs down while I held the torso and tried to distract him. Almost immediately after the needle when into his thigh, his smile turned into a tight frown and his eyes got really big. That half a second turned out to be the calm before the storm as Micah’s lungs soon sent forth some impressive screams. For the 5 seconds or so that the nurse pushed the vaccine into his leg, Micah cried bloody murder and thrashed his head back and forth on the table (that was the only part of his body that he could move). Then, the needle was pulled out and Micah’s wails quickly turned to little whimpers and eventually a half smile. But it didn’t last long as the second needle was already in hand only 10 seconds after the first. The same scene (except it was an immediate storm – no “calm” beforehand).

It then occurred to me, Micah is going through trauma and all he can see is his daddy staring down at him (probably smiling!). In his memory of this event, who will he remember and hold responsible? Who is the goat? That’s right…me! “Daddy, daddy…I’ve been shot and all you can do is stand over me acting like a clown?” (no sight of mom holding down his legs!) Oh well, his memory is very short. As soon as the shot was finished, Andrea (the hero) comes and whisks Micah up in her arms. The tears subside and all is calm again. Now, Micah has two cool Band-Aids to show off.

What a way to celebrate one’s 2-month anniversary! Well, that, and a nice carrot cake that our housemate made especially for the month-aversary celebration.

  1. Poor little baby! Word of wisdom, give him some tylenol about 30-45 minutes BEFORE the shot to help numb some of the pain. I read that piece of advice in Parents magazine.

  2. Our doctor's nurse is great with the multiple shots. She hits him in both legs at the same time so there is no second shooting.
